like the moon needs poetry, you need me.

san francisco:  it was lovely and cool and foggy.  there was lots of family and birds and drinks and food.

dream

there were floors made of doors and windows.  big gaps, shaker blue.  he was never inside the place he lived, always on the fire escape.  his hand on my side, circling.  his voice on the phone, “i want to grow tired of something, but it won’t be you.”  always a puzzle to get to him.  i had to leap.

etc.

the heart pounds (boom boom boom)

  • i had lots of good intentions for cleaning the entire apartment yesterday, and then again today.  but it hasn’t really happened.  i’ve done a lot, but not everything.  and i can’t keep putting off washing my hair until it’s “done” because, well, i really need to wash my hair.  i did take out lots of trash and recycling and emptied the fridge of bad things like way-expired pineapple juice and blackberry jam that eddie is clearly never going to eat (sorry, e!  and yes, i waited until you were gone to toss it.).
  • i’ve been listening to music as i fall asleep.  i only do this when eddie isn’t around.  it’s just a symptom of nervousness about being alone.  it’s hard to remember a time that i didn’t wake up or go to sleep to music (until i grew up and shared space with someone else).  my first clock radio, which i got in maybe first grade, could only get the public radio station from a few cities over.  they played classical music every night except one.  then it was jazz.  i always stayed up late, in the dark, on that night.
  • i’ve finished almost four books in the last week.  i’m dreading next month when i get back to work on my thesis and have to give up this feeling of guiltlessness.  it’s been so good to feel this weightless and free, even just for a few weeks.  i got an anthony bourdain book in the mail from paperback swap and i’m going to try and rip through that.  i wonder what my personal record is for number of books read in a week.  i guess i can’t really count the summer between second and third grade when i probably read twenty books or so in seven days(i was working towards prizes for the library summer reading program), as most of those were probably nancy drew books.  i miss nancy drew books.
  • we’re going to san francisco next week for a big family shindig.  lots of davis-relations i haven’t met and some that i haven’t seen in awhile.  and there’s a bonfire.  and we get to see brian.  and also go to sfmoma (where it would be nice if this and this were on view).
  • the people across the street are in permanent evening cookout mode.  four nights in a row.  and now that i say “the people across the street” i’m actually not sure if that’s correct.  it’s a garage across the street, but i don’t know who it belongs to.  i know the door opens as it starts to get dark.  and the grill comes out.  and the lawn chairs.  and the music.  they stay out there for six, seven, eight hours.  i went to bed at four a.m. and there were still a couple of guys out.  smoking and laughing in the near-light.

hard at work but hardly working

there are a lot of things i need to go see:

  1. this
  2. this
  3. this (and i guess while i’m there, i can see this)
  4. this (by appointment!)
  5. this

it’s supposed to be less than a million degrees next week, so hopefully i can get up the energy.

everyone is making love/or else expecting rain

wedding-related

  • i think we have the hotel room situation all sussed out.  got the last spaces in marfa and then grabbed a huge block of rooms in alpine, most of which we won’t have to use.
  • worked out designs for the invitations on a napkin last night.
  • have quite a few confirmed guests despite not having sent out any kind of formal announcement yet; mostly family.*
  • “quite a few” is proportionally small since we’re not inviting a lot of people in the first place.  we want it to stay small, you know.  nothing big.

not wedding related

  • it is so, so, SO hot.  we didn’t put the air conditioner in until july last year.  i’m thinking i’m going to have it drag it out of hiding when i get home from work.  it’s supposed to get up to 102 here today.  102?!
  • our friend erik had to have an emergency appendectomy.  get well, erik!
  • our friend rebecca turned twenty-nine yesterday and my heat-addled brain forgot to remind me to call her.  we love you, becca!
  • it’s hard to cook when it’s this hot.  honestly.
  • the sex in the city movie is really bad.  really, really bad.
  • being stuck in sunday night traffic is much better when you get to listen to bob dylan live, 1966.
*late add
  • i got a funny, semi-distressed email from a friend claiming i had forgotten to tell her about the engagement.  i directed her attention to this, which was over a week ago.  and then i also told her that we’re gradually telling close friends personally as we get time.  pretty much at this point, we’ve only called family members and a couple of other people.
  • so i’ll say it (kind of again): eddie and i are getting married. we are really excited. we have busy lives and lots going on, so maybe cut us a break. if you haven’t gotten a phone call or an email, don’t be upset. i imagine that if you’re close enough to us to be reading this right now, you’ll hear from us soon.  really.

etc.
